4000 Hooks Per Day

19 03 2013

If you can bait one 500 hook longline in 1 hour – then you can do 4000 hooks in an 8 hour day! An average guy on a boat can set 12 buckets (or 500 hook lines) on his own, add a crew member and it jumps to 24. At 3500 ISK per bucket ($28), you can make a decent living. Sometimes the baiters go on the boats and then they get a percentage of the catch.

Every hook recieves its own piece of fish. If one is missing or bent, he fixes it on the spot!

But, if you can get an automatic bait machine…. then why do it by hand? Well there is the quota system and a boat that uses a hand baiter automatically gets 16% more quota. So local jobs are kept and fishing remains in the small villages. Unfortunately, all the bait comes from abroad.

A basic long line design. This is considered a more selective fishery because you can select bait and hooks. However, bycatch of birds is a major issue.
