The Lonely Rower On Vigur

1 04 2013

Today we paddled (kayaks) 20km from Súðavík to Vigur Island in the warm weather and sunshine! Vigur is one of three islands in Ísafjördur, the other two are inhabited. The island lies off the mouth of Skötufjarðar. It is long and narrow and is named because of its shape (the word vigur means spear).

Vigur has the oldest boat in the country, the eight oared Vigur Breiður (Vigur Wide). It was built about 1800, and was used until 2000 to move sheep between the mainland and the islands, and is still in good condition and seaworthy. Halldor took this picture, jokingly telling me that I am the only rower on the entire island (which is inhabited by 5 people)!
