Reykjavik’s Infamous Mayor

31 05 2013

Today I visited the City Hall and found out exactly why everyone loves the mayor! He never went to university, used to be a taxi driver, and played in a punk rock band called “Runny Nose”. The musician, actor and comedian made international headlines in 2010 when his satirical “Best Party” won the race for mayor it had worked so hard to mock. The party called for free towels at public pools, a drug-free parliament, a polar bear for the petting zoo, and free Disneyland. There also was a promise to break all of  the promises. Jón Gnarr’s party became the fourth in four years to fill the mayoral position at a time when public disillusion was soaring.

A strange City Hall for an even stranger Mayor! (and the portholes are the bathrooms!)

But two-and-a-half years into his term and four years after the country’s incapacitating economic collapse, Jón has overcome skeptics and confounded the political establishment in Reykjavik to become a symbol of Iceland’s economic and cultural rebirth. Jón has done many things to improve the city and also had to make some difficult decisions like make layoffs, but he is very popular among Reykjavik’s residents!

Polish Film Festival…. In Ísafjörður?

28 05 2013

Oh yes, that is right… Pólska kvikmyndahátíðin á Ísafirði! There is a large population of Polish in the Westfjords and that is why Ísafjörður was chosen for the Polish Film Festival. All of the movies had a Polish connection – language, director, actors, or subject. The event was free and held in the Cinema.

Snowed In

27 05 2013

Astrid, Hlynur and I had intended on leaving the farm Sunday night. But the afternoon weather brought snow and wind. Causing drifts so high we had to turn around and wait for the road to be cleared in the morning.

Just a normal end of May blizzard!

Expect the unexpected with weather in Iceland! And always bring a shovel.

Not all the Sheep Have Names

25 05 2013

But when they do… they are great! Hlynur named his sheep Maple because Hlynur means maple. Maple had a lamb, which they call Pancake! She is also known as 3146 (lamb 146 born year 2013). The other unlucky lambs just go by their number.

Its Maple the person with Ms Maple the sheep with Pancake the lamb.
