Most friendly in the WORLD!

14 05 2013

As the Washington Post puts it,

“Buried several hundred pages into a new World Economic Forum report on global tourism, past the sections on air travel infrastructure and physician density (by which they mean the number of physicians per capita, not the mass-per-cubic-meter of individual doctors), are some very interesting numbers. The WEF has compiled survey data from 140 countries estimating the attitude of each countries’ population toward foreign visitors.”

And yes, the tiny, glacier-covered nation perched in the freezing Norwegian Sea boasts the friendliest people in the world! The weather in Iceland might be cold but the people of this nation have the warmest hearts.

This map shows the top 20 friendly countries in the world and ranks countries from red (most welcoming) to pale blue (least). The UK comes 55th and the US 102nd.

Now I could have told you this, from the very first day I arrived. But in case you do not believe the WEF, there are some examples:

1) When I arrived to Iceland on 4 hours sleep, Belinda from the Fulbright Commission took me home to sleep on her couch – after meeting me earlier that day.

2) The kayak guys are always checking to see that we are properly dressed for the weather and if we are missing something they lend their personal gear.

3) The neighbors call when they are going to the grocery store (a 5km walk) to see if we want a ride.

4) Three exchange students with huge bags used the Ride Share website to get a ride up to the Westfjords, the driver wouldn’t take money for gas – which at minimum was $5o. He was going that way anyways.

5) Every time I see one of my fellow choir members, they give me a huge hug!
