The "blow" from the whale is the easiest way to spot a whale. And sometimes you could hear the whale before seeing it. Usually they took a few breaths at the surface before taking a fluking deep-dive.

The “blow” from the whale is the easiest way to spot a whale. And sometimes you could hear the whale before seeing it. Usually they took a few breaths at the surface before taking a fluking deep-dive. One group found this was at 8 second intervals, followed by a dive of exactly 2:30!

During the course, we learned the techniques of tracking and dive times. Every time the whale came up… we shouted “SURFACE”. Then the dive time was taken, along with GPS, compass heading, and distance from boat. Of course we were also taking notes on the birds, weather, and sea state.
