Around Æðey

Æðey is the largest island in the djúp and was given the name because of the eider farming. There has been a weather station since 1946 and has a good natural harbor.

We almost stopped on the island Æðey in Ísafjarðardjúp, but were told that they were hunting so we did not make landfall.

Here you can see Johann wearing traditional fishing clothes - sheep skin, with cow leather shoes, all covered in cod liver oil. Obvioiusly people did not have six fingers 100 years ago. But these mittens have an extra thumb in case it wore out while rowing.

Gísla Saga

Gísla saga Súrssonar took place in the Westfjords of Iceland. It tells the story of Gisli, a tragic hero who must kill one of his brothers-in-law to avenge another brother-in-law. Gisli is outlawed and forced to stay on the run for thirteen years before he is finally hunted down and killed. Although set in the period 940-980, the saga was most likely written in the 13th century. In 1981 it was made into a film titled Útlaginn (The Outlaw).

The one-man production by Elfar Logi Hannesson

In his one-man production, Elfar Logi Hannesson, attempts to describe the family relations and conflicts in the saga.

Gísli The main character of the saga who decides to seek out vengeance for the murder of Vestein. He kills Þorgrim because he believes he is the murderer. Gísli is outlawed by his own sister.
Auður Gísli’s wife and Vestein’s sister. She stays loyal to her husband even when faced with her own death.
Þorgrímur Þordis’s husband and the suspected murderer of Vestein. Refused to make the oath with Vestein because he felt it would cause him more trouble and stress.
Þorkell Gisli’s brother who lives on a farm with Þorgrim. Þorkel chooses to help Gisli but only to a certain extent. The two sons of Vestein, in search of vengeance, kill Þorkel.
Ásgerður Wife of Þorkel. She starts a long chain of tragic events when Þorkel overhears her confessing her love for Vestein.
Vésteinn Gísli’s brother-in-law and best friend who is murdered in his sleep.
Eyjólfur Leader of the group of men who hunt after Gísli.
Þórdís Wife to Þorgrim and sister to Gisli. After Þorgrim’s murder she remarries Bork and urges him to avenge the death of his brother Þorgrim by killing Gisli.
Börkur Þordis’s second husband and Þorgrim’s brother. He decides to chase after Gisli in pursuit of vengeance for Þorgrim’s death.
